At least when I was a kid in Seattle we were taught about it in very positive (if somewhat sanitized) terms. I’d expect the Confederate states to be less excited about it.
It’s not that long ago that “the War of Northern Aggression” was a thing, and there’s plenty of people alive that physically fought against the Civil Rights Movement. We aren’t nearly far enough away from slavery for me to give The South the benefit of the doubt.
Despite what you hear, in your own specific town, in your own specific school, you are a sample size of one - You can’t just blanket claim that the American south has meaningfully progressed on behalf of all the fervent majority trump supporting states.
Also, “taught… In a positive way” is an extremely subjective assessment considering both the content itself and your recalling it from long memory. Many of us also thought we had the real version or the “right” version until we tried to actively learn the objective truth.
