I always kinda wanted an EasyBakeOven (or QueasyBakeOven to get around the annoying gender stereotypes)

Also had the Baskin’ Robbins Ice Cream maker but my stupid mother wouldnt let me use it for some reason. Like she made it seem like she needed to be involved for me to use it and she wouldnt make herself available for that -> defacto unusable by fiat

It’s probably a good thing you didn’t get the Easy Bake or any of its knockoffs/clones. The thing was banned shortly after release because kids kept burning themselves and their houses down.

My eight-year-old cousin had one. The first time she used it, she ended up with burns on her hands and had to go to the hospital. I don’t know the circumstances of what happened, but knowing her mom, she probably wasn’t being supervised when it happened, and, knowing my cousin (and eight-year-olds), she probably didn’t read the instructions. So, the danger probably lies more in the concept than the execution.

I had one. We had one, me and twin. It worked so poorly. It’s just a really hot lightbulb. So it took awhile to bake anything and was still dangerous cause lightbulb and why they were discontinued. Mother found out so silly she just started teaching us how to use the stove really young. It’s why I got into baking, since I was allowed to make cookies whenever and did.

How often do you chat with your twin now? Twins are so interesting to me :)

How did people actually burn themselves and also possibly their house down?

I live with my twin, so…we talk often!

People didn’t burn the house down. They’re burn themselves being children and stupid. They’d put fingers into the oven and burn fingers on the hot bulb. Because it has to be pretty hot to actually cook with the heat from a bulb. They’d keep making the bulb cooler to try and stop kids burning themselves, which meant the food took forever to cook. So they just got rid of the line.

We grew up poor. No easybake; and that ice cream playset is new for me. My friends had the hungry hippo game, mastermind, battleship, lots of gi-joe dolls, then nintendos and 3DOs and segas later.

Strangely enough, we were fine with monopoly and sorry and cards - uno! - and even wooden swords; but what I envied was the train set my friend’s dad had set up. It was glorious, with mountains and tunnels and switches and houses and trees, all papier mache and painted wooden models and plastic people.

  • I always wanted the die-cast metal Transformers toys from the 80s. My god parents’ son had a bunch and they were the fucking shit. Especially Megatron and Soundwave.

I see multiple people saying they wanted an EZ Bake Oven: It was great, but it was kind of a one and done for me since where we lived they sold more of the oven than the recipe kits to use with it. Once the stuff that came with it was cooked, it basically never got used except to maybe melt GI Joes for “battle damage.”

    #3: Metal Voltron

This guy was heavy enough to knock out your little sister. In an era of plastic Gobots and G.I Joes the die cast metal Voltron was the king of the toybox. I had the inferior plastic Voltron lions but knew a kid with the metal version and there was no comparison. Well I guess there was a comparison the metal one was much cooler.

    #2: Omnibot 2000

I got a few toy robots over the years but the most control they would usually have is a single wired push button to make them roll or maybe move an arm. The Omnibot 2000 ads made it look like a freakin’ R2D2. I was convinced he would be my ultimate playmate and companion and probably help me with my homework. I never got to see one in person.

    #1 U.S.S. Flagg

The G.I. Joe aircraft carrier was a legend. They didn’t really bother putting ads for this thing in the Sears catalog, to this day I have no idea how much the Flagg cost and at the time was never sure if it really existed. You would hear about it through the grapejuice vine though. Half believed tales from friends of friends claiming to have seen one at a cousins house in Vermont. A beat up used Skystriker plane from goodwill that would land on this thing was the closest I ever got and that was the biggest toy in my box, dwarfing the Kenner X-Wing fighter. Truly a grail of the day.

Ha, anxiety/control issues maybe. My mom was like this when a Friend asked me to sleep over, and my mom would say no, its not enough notice. (We had nothing planned ever, that it would conflict with.)
