I remember when I was learning negative numbers the first time our mat teacher was giving us problems like -2 + 6 or whatever for practice. Nobody else was answering so I did a few and after I got them right he was like “How’d you figure it out” and I told him the smaller number cancelled out part of the bigger number. He was like no that’s wrong and was a dick about it. To this day I don’t remember what the real explanation was because I was pissed but it really put me off that dude when he did that after I had just demonstrated that I understood how to do the problems multiple times.
Never had good luck with math teachers in grade school.
