Good to see a big social media company push back against the insanity for once.
I am 100% convinced that this is only going to be used to train their bots to be more convincing
That’s intriguing. Can you elaborate?
Smarter people than me can do it better, but imagine a simple a/b test. 10 videos, 5 with settings A 5 with settings B, give all a [statistics] amount of views. One set gets more slop flags than the other. Tweak settings/model and repeat until they don’t get flagged anymore.
I don’t believe for a second YouTube didn’t try to intentionally push slop, hoping users would be satisfied so that they could cut out human creators. I bet the only reason they’re now backtracking is that people hate it.
YouTube has always tried to ‘push the boundaries’ but can never handle when the boundaries push back somehow. Not to mention they are likely utilising AI in their crappy algorithm

I mean, they always have. YouTube’s whole job is to get you to watch more YouTube. It sees you watched video A so now it trys to figure out what else you might like to watch next so it suggests video B based on your interests and watching patterns. What the algorithm specifically prioritizes has changed a few times, which is why there’s been fads in the algorithm. But determining what is something you’d be interested in isn’t something that’s easy to put directly into code, but something that can “vibe” it out is a much better tool to use. Its actually one of the better use cases for AI (AI in broad terms not specifically LLMs or other generative slop currently on everyone’s shit list).
Not when it first started they didn’t. In the noughties, when YouTube stopped being a dating site and started being a video-sharing site, the algorithm was pretty simple: first upload, first serve effectively. It’s only over 2 decades that meddling fingers have bastardised that poor site with AI and sloppy algorithms that churn up the muck and put crap in your feed
Tech bros insist people cant tell, the rest of the world is like, dude we can tell and hate it.
AI is grift all the way around and it’s stupid. The only people you love AI are the idiots because it makes them feel smart.
They really shouldn’t. If you have to depend on an alleged ‘intelligent’ computer program to tell you even basic things like what to do every day, you’re doing something wrong.
