This article on what Google claims it has done/will do with its AI is extraordinary for all the wrong reasons.

Here’s a sample:

We’ve made extraordinary progress to deliver on our full AI stack.

What ‘stack’? All you have is Gemini which can’t remember what it said yesterday, can’t open a spreadsheet, can’t even get a frickin’ Family Guy quote right!

the Gemini app reached 950M monthly users

Wow! What a way to scam people out of money and data.

At the same time, there’s never been a more important moment to shape the future of AGI and science

Oh boy, where to start with how wrong this one is…

And that’s only a sample of the content of this ludicrous thing…

Yes I am wroth with them. The assistant app works for everything I actually want to do with the stuff in my house. I don’t want to have a conversation with my speaker, I just want it to play music. I want the tablet thing in the kitchen to show me the cute weather frog, and set timers when I ask it to. Google assistant handles that, in English or Spanish, has good voice recognition and consistent results.

Gemini is both too smart and too dumb.

I am just going to give up voice commands, honestly. Can set a timer on the kitchen thing using my phone, send music to the speakers same way, hopefully never activate the freaking AI.

They’re removing Assist (which works and I use when I’m driving) for Gemini (which does not work). Does anyone have a solution? Because I cannot use Gemini while driving, it’s a nightmare.

Yeah, I used to hit the button on the steering wheel and say “call (name)” and it would reliably… call that person…

Now Gemini took it over and it… Usually calls that person. But sometimes it will inform me that it found a contact by that name in my contacts and disengage as if mission accomplished, sometimes it will do that then ask if I want to call that person, one time it went weird and started speaking what sounded like a reasoning chain (something like: searched for (name) in user contacts, found a match with number 123-456-7890, adding that to the context to continue the conversation).

Note that back in the 2000s, my RAZRv3 could do this task shockingly well. Now thanks to Gemini, it is now less reliable than a 20 year old phone that by necessity did it all on device…

Yes: stop using AI. That’s the simplest fix. What the hell do you use AI for whilst frickin’ driving? (Not having a go, just can’t wrap my head around it)

Is Assistant AI? I thought it pre-dated that. I use it for navigation and replying to messages so I don’t get distracted or have to pull over all the time.

You need to be more precise. Assistant was using traditional voice recognition technology, which is “AI” but has been around a lot longer than LLMs have and doesn’t have any of the same problems. It’s tried and true.

Voice controls have long been a beneficial technology both for navigating hands-free as well as an assistive technology.

AI is an entire field of computer science, and purpose-built models have many practical applications and are much, much better than shoehorning everything under the sun into generative language models.

The primary issue of LLMs is everyone trying to use it for things it was never intended to do. They are a decent model of human language, and can produce text that is a reasonable facsimile of text a human might produce. Not semantically, but in form. They are not a search engine or source of knowledge or reasoning, as so many try to use them.

But despite this mismatch, AI companies just try to brute force the problem away with scale by creating astoundingly massive models from all of the data on the internet in an attempt to encode “knowledge” present on the internet in a very incidental way. This makes for something that can sometimes incidentally produce that encoded information, which fools people into thinking it’s “intelligent”, when it is, of course, anything but. It’s a very roundabout and unreliable way of doing things, which is why it’s so incredibly dumb that people have lost their fucking minds over it.

Absolutely the foundation of this and all of my other posts.

I get your point about needing to be more specific; I was actually referring to pre-LLM ‘AI’ which isn’t really AI, and even that is not perfect but is certainly preferable to modern LLMs/AGI

AGI and science: Demis has described us as standing in the foothills of the singularity, and has been spending a lot of his time engaging externally. He and I have been long discussing a role that allows him to put his full attention on actively shaping the future of AGI. It’s work that is vitally important to Alphabet and humanity, and I can’t imagine a better person than Demis to do it. So, moving forward, Demis will become the Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. He’ll remain closely connected to Koray, Josh, and our GDM teams, advising across models and research. I’m so excited for Demis — this is truly his life’s work and purpose. You can read Demis’s note to GDM below.

[They’re] Doing their part to normalize mental illness, I guess.
