I said this almost a decade ago, but companies and the government (NSA) were hoovering up data for years. Encrypted and not. Could they analyze all of it at the time? No, so it was generally only looked at for targeted things. But now, you have ways of distilling data on a massive scale and just asking it a question. And once quantum computing comes far enough and can break encryption, all that stored data becomes even more meaningful.
