I will accept this burden.
usually, but if there’s any reason, even one far short of an emergency, it’s a coin toss.
if we lived in a different society, like an actual anarchist or communist society, I’m sure i would act differently. but I’m not sure we’d have shopping carts and grocery stores.
Gain nothing? How about self respect…
even though you gain nothing?
I call begging the question!
It assumes a purely capitalist worldview where the only way you can personally gain from an action is via monetary reward. I know I’m preaching to the choir here on Lemmy, but being in the US I think it’s still worth pointing out because it’s a full-on cultural disease.
Now, if you don’t mind, I need to go spend most of my evening doing things that will seemingly gain me nothing. Omg what if I spend some money on materials I need for a hobby? NeGaTiVe gAiNz?!??
Return your cart and another that’s nearby. Sacrifice a little extra time to…
Slow the Decay.
Better praxis
Disable the perimeter wheel lock sensor and then put it back.
I want to live in a world where people return the shopping carts, therefore I do it myself. If you don’t, you’re an antisocial prick.
Sometimes I even fix the shit show of random carts in random return lanes so everything fits all neat.
Same. And I’m being serious here while it could sound sarcastic:
I feel good knowing I saved the cart return guy 15 seconds. His day will not be improved because he still needs to move all the carts; and when that task ends there will be another. I understand this, but I still feel like I made the place better than I found it. Where I am, it’s hot-AF outside right now, so I hope that I’m making the next indoor task sooner and my time is appreciated – but my time is literally like <1 minute, so I know it’s not a lot of anti-entropy.
My math is that, with billions of people on the planet, if even part of us tried to save someone 15 seconds every few days, we could build so much faith in humanity.
I give the people in the handicapped spots a pass. They might not physically be able to go to the cart return and back.
OK, so the correct thing to do in this situation is tuck the cart behind or hook the wheels over a parking barrier/curb, or if there’s no other option tip the cart onto its back/handle side. Don’t just leave the cart loose rolling around. I’ve seen a gust of wind blow a loose cart into a parked car and smash the brake light cover out.
But also, if you’re physically disabled to this level how are you using the shopping cart in the first place?
Or they may be totally capable but it will burn up their energy reserves for the day and have more stuff to get done.
Best not to judge, as you said.
There’s no scripture about shopping carts therfore there’s no eternal damnation looming over you if you don’t put them back. Take that atheists!
Absolutely agree. I return mine every time and silently judge everyone who doesn’t. It’s the simplest thing in the world
What does returning a cart have to do with being social?
Not the previous poster, but it acknowledges one’s participation in collective behavior for mutual benefit.
Social as in “building or maintaining society”.
Not social as In “socializing in order to enter high society”.
(As in “society.”)
Leaving a stray cart in the parking lot is very antisocial behavior.
Depends whether there’s any Teslas nearby that need blocking in
Back in the late '80s and early '90s my brother and I would run all over the parking lots while our mom was in the store, and return all the carts. We would see how big of a stack we could manage to get moving while we were at it. IIRC our record was 43 carts. We really wanted to hit 50, but I think that was just too much mass for us to handle.
I don’t clear the lot anymore, but I do park out by the edge of a lot, if I brought my car, and pick up any carts on the way into the store.
Steal the carts and sell them back to the store for a finders fee.
We have these coin lock trollies here.
I made a tool that bypasses the coin lock so I know that every time I return my trolley I am motivated purely by social concern and not self interest.
I am 100% serious, I wish I knew what was wrong with me.
I am motivated purely by social concern and not self interest.
In that case, allow me to fix that last line for you:
I am 100% serious, this is what’s right with me.
Be the change and all that. Keep being socially conscious - we need that more than ever right now.
It’s completely derranged to be so annoyed at the idea of being coerced into doing something that you buy a thing, pull it apart and figure out how it works, make a tool to bypass it, and continue doing exactly the same thing but now “freerer”
This man invented a machine to prove his morality.
Not a man. The sexism of assuming everyone is sucks
They hand out free plastic tokens for the trollies at the registers here in Lidl’s in Denmark, and people still put their trolly back.
Yes yes, everything is better in denmark except the food. We are very tired of hearing this :p
Legacy of good ol’ small town social control that we call “the law of Jante” in Northern Europe, rule 6 I think: “You’re not to think you are more important than we are.”
Only someone from a nordic country could look at satire of conformity and say “Good idea!” the remarks later in the article, my lord. While I’m all for a tight binding social contract I think you should be encouraged to be weird while fulfilling it!
We even have those little plastic coins in Aus! Just had to ask at the help desk at the supermarket and they’d give you one with its own little keyring adaptor too! Really useful when you needed it!
You can also use the round side of a key to bypass it.
I routinely take the cart back and forget to take the coin back.
I can give you knowledge of the craft of bypassing but you must swear that you shall not misuse it, nor pass it on before determining the good character of the receiver and swearing them to this same oath.
You may find in time the knowledge weighs heavily upon you, and you will be forced to confront who you truly are.
(trolleys are srs biznus)
Fuckin’ Uncle Ben up in here with his trolley problem.
Ugh, I rolled my ankle a couple weeks ago and still needed to do shopping that day. I was leaning on the cart to stabilize myself. I really did not want to have to walk the cart back to its corral at the end, because walking hurt like hell. But these memes, man, these memes guilted me into doing it anyway.
even though you gain nothing
This is Aldi, I get my quarter back.
I once paid 8 fucking bucks to use a cart at an airport. They give you a quarter back for returning it. I feel like they misunderstood the meaning of “deposit” but whatever, I absolutely did not return that shit and hopefully someone else saved 8 bucks.
That’s just forced incentive to take it back.
And it works. I’ve never seen an Aldi with a parking lot strewn with carts.
Sometimes I don’t even make it back to the cart area before someone comes up to me with a quarter to trade for the cart.
Kinda sounds like the people around you are a problem. In my area, most places are paid but even the free ones don’t have carts just left around. They’re often lazily put in the shelter thing but they’re in there.
Theres plastic tokens you can use in those. In Poland, in nearby leroy merlin (it’s a french(?) home improvement store) they even give them out to customers.
I guess people don’t carry around change all that much here.
if I put a quarter in the cart that would tell me precisely how much the value of the cart being returned is, and as such increase the likelihood of me putting it in a bush.
Thats just mean :<
So you’re just a trash human and openly admitting it? Congrats, I guess?
Of something tells me the exact price for a service I will either take full advantage of it or not use it at all
So you’re antisocial trash, got it.
as soon as they offer a way to make something a transaction they shouldn’t be suprised when people treat it as such
Need an extra shovel to keep digging that hole buddy? Neolibs can go stay on Reddit.
nah, I’ve already got my own excavator
Always, because when I wear my heelys I can lift up the back of the cart and basically Tokyo drift through the parking lot and the looks I get fuel me.
Just be careful if there are women around, you don’t want to hydroplane
I love wearing my heelys while shopping. I push the cart hard then just hold on and coast. I love when I make eye contact with a child while their parent is busy and just wheel by them. When they tell them that the lady that just went by had wheels on her shoes and they see me standing looking at beans or something, they think the kid was lying… Gaslighting lil Timmy with heelys.
I gain the satisfaction of being a conscientious member of society.

The irony of using Walter White gif as a reaction is not lost on me.
