Fast forward 5 months: massive data breach for everyone that used the system, mischarges from others to your account with no way to get your money back, police and politicians demanding data access without a court order, etc

Didn’t apple get sued because a Chinese woman’s sister could unlock her phone?

… Just googled it and there’s multiple cases with Chinese users, including a coworker and a woman’s son.

I wonder if there’s a technical reason or just lack of neural network training on some communities.

I’m specifically thinking of the nose bridge and cheeks area of people with some Asian relatives in their gene pool. The sunken nose bridge and puffy cheeks appearance is so prevalent that a lot of prescription glasses are sold as “Asian fit” so that it clears the cheeks. My partner is half Laotian and half white/Hispanic, and she needs Asian fit glasses despite not looking particularly Asian.

I’m wondering if their facial recognition software focuses too much on the shape of the middle of the face, which could lead to close Asian relatives, who share a lot of the same genes, to be scanned as the same person as they may have the exact same nose-cheek area shape.

Yeah it works great they don’t even need to register, the system says they already did.

Heck of a credit card bill, for that one guy. I wonder if theres a sneaky line in the TOS about how “best effort” is good enough and sticks him with the bill anyway.

My apartment building has a facial recognition system to unlock the door to the building. My cousin got recognized as his brother that was in the system and the door just opened for them.

What a wonderful idea to use the same tech to deal with money.

Cue Zooey Deschanel/Kate Perry/Emily Blunt meme

I have so many questions. How does it differentiate customers? Like say I’m standing in line just off to the side behind someone buying a few big ticket items, when the face scan happens how will it know which face to charge? Same question for a couple people checking out together. Will I have to take my hat and sunglasses off to check out or does it use other technologies to build face maps like lidar? What if I got a broken nose or fractured orbital, can I just not buy things? What about beards, if a guy scans his face initially with a beard and shaves it, how will the system respond? Is there an upper limit on purchases made this way like there is with tap to pay? What will it do about age verified products like tobacco or alcohol?

I would bet money they didn’t test for any of that and if they did it would be within very narrow parameters.

Yes, these are all problems that will be solved very, very quickly once this launches and totally fails and we never hear about it again.

How easy is it to use it to scam people? If I smile in public, can I get photographed and that used to pay things? Is a smiling photo the next “they stole my card”?

The Intuit Dome in LA already does this. You grab food/drinks and it automatically charges you based on your face. And you guessed it, there have been many complaints about people getting charged for something they didn’t get. I’m never stepping foot inside that venue.

How does it differentiate customers? Same question for a couple people checking out together.

Airports already handle this on a daily basis:

      Cameras scan only small field.

Will I have to take my hat and sunglasses off to check out or does it use other technologies to build face maps like lidar?

Probably the same as face unlock in iPhones. You can check how this works and apply answers here.

What will it do about age verified products like tobacco or alcohol?

This is just another form of payment so it will do the same as credit card or cash.

That works because it’s the TSA agent’s responsibility to make it work. This will not apply to your average stoned gas station employee.

Additionally, this system checks against specifically the driver’s license photo.

I’ll pass completely then, I don’t mind credit cards too much since I like to get refunds.

I can’t say my face isn’t already in a bunch of countries databases in multiple countries; but I’ll take the small loss to get in and out of the airport.

Despite not completely agreeing with the method, flying into Japan is so easy now. Literately just go get my passport sticker-ed, the more stickers the less questions, look in the camera, grab my luggage, check in a podium terminal and mark that you don’t have pets and find out what exit to go through, and then walk out, another camera scans your face as you walk out. I would say the only thing that’s slow is the baggage claim. Korea is really bad with this one.

I think eventually it will be inevitable. But I’ll stick with cash as long as I can, not having something in your hand makes it really easy to overspend.

Yes but there’s a big difference between IDs and biometric data, not to mention you can (in Europe at least) revoke an ID if you find it’s compromised, you can revoke an ID you can’t revoke your face.

This is the important part. Faces are immutable. Unless you’re a weird celebrity, you only get one.

Attaching your financial data and/or private data to something that cannot be changed and CAN be stolen or reproduced is a terrible fucking idea.

While real security technologies are moving toward ephemeral, short-lived credentials to fight credential reuse and theft, we have these fucktards going in the complete opposite direction.

Your face is NOT a password.
