Don’t want to guit-trip anyone but being critical of what you eat is good for everyone. Eating less meat is good for the planet and your health, even if the meat is not contaminated. If you don’t like CNN you can find very similar content from other sources by using a search engine of your choice.

    Yes, I’m cherry picking.

Got food poisoning this week, probably from cilantro.

I’m pissed. First time I’m my life I’ve ever had it and now I have to boil my pico de gallo or it’ll probably happen again

The great thing about cilantro is that you can wash it with soap and if you leave a little soap on there you won’t taste it

No boil, but wash in (lightly) soapy water with lots of agitation for at least a minute and rinse well. Or use a product designed for that and rinse well.

Yeah, I’d be pissed too. The problem these days is that anything less than an actual cleaning agent isn’t going to dislodge whatever industrial-strength nasty is on the leaves, so you can’t just rinse and call it done anymore.

Not shaming you, I had to learn the hard way too. I wash all produce now, and have for years. When you know, you know, and now unfortunately you know too.

I’m probably going to do both going forward

I know boiling works cus I cooked the beans I made with the water from the contaminated pico the cilantro was in (didn’t know I had a problem at that point).

I’ve been eating the beans still, no problems, so the cooking must’ve helped neutralize it.

The tomatoes are pretty watery, even after pulling out over a cup of water. Plus the lime juice added a bit back.

Basically I just dumped it into a high-rimmed sauce pan, turned on the heat and waited til it was boiling. I gave it ~25 minutes on a light boil, and it smelled a bit less pungent but otherwise looked about the same.

Obligatory joke about how it’s a bigger pain the ass to not wash it.

Fr though I’ve heard it’s basically impossible to wash the bacteria off veggies if it’s there and cooking is the only safe option. Washing is for dirt and pesticides. So do both.

My grandmother lived in an expat enclave in Taipei in the 60s and was told to dunk absolutely everything from the market in a dilute bleach solution and let it dry.

Same treatment for the odd skin rash. Have the kid take a bath in dilute bleach (I have had this procedure, itchy as fuck but it works).

              I guess that’s an option

That still means eating less meat - good luck raising a cow in your neighborhood lol

Damn near everything in this shithole is contaminated as of the past year or two so there’s no winning safety-wise by shifting to plant-based, at least on that front.

I have noticed I tend to get sicker when I eat the (properly cooked!) little meat I can lately, though, which I suspect is due to skyrocketed antibiotic use in poultry farming the last decade or two. I also avoid deli meats for similar reasons.

And my following paragraph elaborates on meat still being a somewhat worse option

Okay, my bad. I take safety as meaning overall health outcomes not just acute sickness.

I do think it’s useful to consider that fecal contamination of produce is often associated with poor management of waste from the industrial slaughter industry.

It makes sense, the government is contaminated with greedy/corrupt/pervy morons, of course they wouldn’t be able to give any serious thought into their responsibilities. They’re too busy taking bribes or hanging out on Islands or funding genocide.

Anyone with half a brain knew this was going to happen, eventually.

The only question is, was it on purpose or by accident?

I say a combination of both, in that order.

      Yes, I’m cherry picking.

and those are “linked” and “may”

Reducing methane production is an easier sell. Crops are less a better return on land use -> food. The better Plant based beef for most uses is better than trash-level burger meat.

I’m gonna need you to go into your moldy bathroom, look into your toothpaste splattered mirror…and slap yourself. Three times. Really hard.

Or, just look at yourself and think about what you just said.

I’m sure either option will be equally painful.
