I thought the book was pretty much spot on, lots of chaos and ineptitude at the beginning and after a bit of natural selection the survivors got their shit together.
Battle of Yonkers is only unrealistic due to not using nukes. I absolutely believe this admin wouldn’t blink at the thought of dropping a nuke on our own soil.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read the book but weren’t the zombies in that walkers and not runners?
I just don’t see how walkers would be a threat in the real world, runners might be able to spread more easily but I think even then they would be quickly contained .
If I remember the book they said Nebraska was a zombie land due to cities evacuating and I80 being congested.
Living in Nebraska we have tons of heavy machinery and farming implements. Can easily hook up a disk to a tractor and plow them into the ground

Numbers. Couple that with the conspiracy theory nuts that would deny they exist and actively assist the spread. Battle of Yonkers was a pretty good example of how a military response could fail. Most people have no concept of how difficult a head shot is nor the energy required and also difficulty in melee attacking a human head.
Ya I get that but as someone who has seen heavy machinery accidents the machine wins always and it’s not even close. Even a 68 ton Abrams tank would do more damage to masses by just plowing over them than weaponry. Sure you’ll get some ankle biter bobs in the weeds but the majority you just rendered immobile .
Now throw some 50ft wide discs and you just have a bunch of grinding saws
50 ft wide tractor implements and tank treads are great in a blank, open environment, but your 50ft discer is not making it into the city, where the highest concentrations of people, and thus Zeke, will be. How do you clear a building with a vehicle? Ram it with the tank? Now you have maybe killed anyone inside who wasn’t dead, and made a pile of difficult to traverse rubble out of a difficult to produce, possibly useful building, and no idea if there is anything inside waiting to infect anyone who starts trying to do the work of clearing it for human use, whether actively in the form of trapped zeds who can wait for ages or passively in the form of juices coating a sharp piece of rubble or biohazard remains getting into a cut. The danger with slow undead isn’t in the open with the full light of the sun to reveal them. It’s how they can surprise you, reanimating in a closet you have to clear with no space to backpedal, wandering off into the woods only to wander back once you think the area is clear, the scared people who are hoping it’s just a regular infection and not wanting to be kicked out of camp so they turn in the night and suddenly they’re inside the perimeter, next to where people are sleeping, the one that turned after crawling into a water tank to hide, and now that seemingly normal water people used to fill their canteens because they haven’t seen clean water since the outbreak shut down the water company is turning a dozen people, seemingly at random. Small outbreaks can be handled. Once it reaches a certain size, though, things break in weird ways.
This. And though the book didn’t get into it, the tank might be able to move but it could be completely surrounded. Zeke would swarm like slow ants on a carcass. What does the tank do when there are a hundred of them clinging and climbing on the tank? The Battle of Hope lasted almost a full day. That was a planned and coordinated fight that had tens of thousands of zombies. How long could a swarmed tank last with no visibility due to carrying a swarm? How close is support when that many zombies are around? You can’t just go shooting them off or you might hurt the tank.
And diesel ain’t gonna last forever. Pull up at the pump, tank crawling with Z… “Ok Junior, jump out and pump the gas would ya, grab yourself a coffee while you wait!”
I mean, the Zombies in WWZ basically run on magic shields to be a threat. They’re utterly invulnerable to anything Max Brooks doesn’t want them to be killed by.
Like, if I remember correctly, they’re immune to shrapnel and bleeding wounds because “the dead don’t need blood”, and nerve toxins or shockwaves don’t harm them because “the dead don’t have a nervous system”. But somehow removing the head is a 100% infallible method of killing them. What is in the head if not blood and nerves, Max?
These are creatures which casually violate the second law of thermodynamics. If they’re playing by real-world physics, chemistry, and biology, they’re radically less dangerous.
