Democracy is not meant to work that way. The feature-contracts it implements is “one person, one vote” and “rule through a majority of votes”.
If you are able to break that contract because of how surrounding systems interact with the democracy subsystem, that means it’s a bug or vulnerability for democracy, used as an exploit by the overarching system implementing the democracy interface.

Apparently NY state allows felons to vote as long as they are not in prison, and Florida defers to the law where the crime was committed, so Trump is allowed to vote in Florida where is “home” is.
The real question isn’t why he’s allowed to vote, but why he’s not in prison. Felons should be allowed to vote, otherwise it would be trivial to lock your opponents out of eligibility through lawfare.
I think at least 26 states a felon can vote if they’ve served their sentence.
