I posted this comment on the same meme in a different comm, but it’s worth saying again:

I’m a big proponent of “showing your weird” – I’ve always liked weird people because they don’t appear to be hiding anything, they just have a genuine quality normal people don’t, whereas people who seem “perfect” or “normal” (whatever that means) are often too good to be true, and are fucked up in a way they have to hide.

I’ve had success showing my weird; it weeds out those who would not want me, and that prevents wasted time and energy on something that’d never work.

All this being said, if I were on a date with a person and they started doing this, well, I’d be extremely interested.

She was probably turned off by the fact that they aren’t maps, but rather nautical charts. :(

This thread is completely devoid of map sea monster facts and that’s a travesty

Honestly this is why I started just telling people when I’m crushing on them.

The worst thing that has ever happened as a result was that they were flattered but did not return the feelings. And honestly? Knowing that helped me move on and stay friends with those people.

I am very much a flirt by nature and this just takes out all the guesswork hahaha. Now, TO BE FAIR, I am a woman and very, uh, let’s just say i get called “cute” and “adorable” a lot, I don’t wanna toot my own horn too much here, but my point is that I am non-threatening. This tactic may not be taken as well coming from a man, but I think it also heavily depends on existing rapport (or lack thereof) with the person of interest.

I have a hard time reading “phobia for eggs.” I feel like it should be phobia of eggs. Or egg phobia.

No no no. You need to start by explaining the evolution of mapmaking, before focusing on the monsters.
Non-map people don’t have enough background on maps, so you must provide that first.

That must have been the problem. I feel like it’s the same problem I had, not describing the backstory to middle earth fully to my date as I told her of the third age…

How did you expect her to understand the significance of the Númenor and the sword of Elendil, or Aragon’s reluctance to claim his rightful throne, let alone the rings worn by Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond? Or why there are exactly nine ring wraiths?

Honestly, did you expect her to just accept the notion that some existential evil was for some reason deciding to wake up now and begin terrorizing the entire known world, without knowing the reasons why, or why destroying this old piece of jewelry is the only way to defeat the evil?

Even the movies cover that part in the very beginning!

Agreed. Not because she’s as fascinated by it, although that would be a plus. But she should be enjoying the time with you, seeing what makes you excited. If that doesn’t attract her, move on.

Be sure to do the same for her interests also. You don’t have to be captivated by her hobbies or knowledge of something, but you should like watching her explain it to you.

Plus, it just sounds interesting. Who wouldn’t be interested by that? I’m always baffled by people who don’t like to learn random shit.

Agree completely- I adore people who are excited about anything and tell me about it with enthusiasm!

That said - it needs to be mutual. Awesome for you to lecture me on your passions - but it’s not a fun relationship for me if you aren’t also eager to hear about the things I want to share.

I never wondered why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

I am now wondering why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

one interesting reason is drew monsters where they didn’t want people to go like their fishing spots

(the monsters were an indication that the sea was dangerous there)

They didn’t know what was there so they made pretty art… thats basically the gist of it… so yeah… you got the introduction in a sentence…

Not hating 27 minutes is either to much or or not enough… but in this case not the right person
