not naming numbers for this phenomenon is a bad habit. because yeah, some crazy nutjobs exist in every place. how many are they though?
Are you sure the US is a developed country?
Not idaho
Incarceration rate and lack of healthcare mean it never has been to me but wtf do I know
Parts of it, certainly.
But we have a strategic policy of enclosure and proletarianization that has been ongoing since the closing of the frontier. The Corporate American Dream is to have labor conditions on par with the The Philippeans accessible from Louisiana or Arizona or Kentucky.
Our problem is largely one of population migration. You can’t find a large enough exploitable class of laborers, because Americans keep picking up and traveling to wealthier corners of the country. So the modern political project is to start closing off borders (US/Mexico and US/Canada and the various Caribbean islands), inflating the domestic population (One Billion Americans), and segregating the interior population a la South African apartheid (The Network State).
We are, if anything, too developed. It’s too easy to move out of the backwaters of Alabama and find a job in Atlanta, Georgia. Too easy to become a petite bourgeois millionaire in Seattle and buy a cheap McMansion in the Boise suburbs. Too easy to get a college degree, land a white-collar job, and enter the professional managerial class.
US domestic policy is now focused on driving up the barriers between ethnic and gender cohorts (anti-DEI initiatives), shrinking PMC (AI initiatives), and turning the unemployed underclass into a paramilitary under the thumb of the plutocracy (ICE, private security services, massive spying initiatives).
Dubai is the future, baby! But we’re not there yet.
Religion
It’s always a problem, but combining religious stupid with 'Murican stupid is several orders of magnitude more stupid than can be understood by anyone who has an IQ over potato
Potato-powered GladOS had greater reasoning ability. This post is offensive to potatoes.
Idaho is the potato state for a reason. That reason is that potatoes have a longer life expectancy than their children on average.
Clap. Clap. Oh good, they managed to get my slow clap processor into this thing. I hope you’re happy because I’m a potato
In my experience, people who assume they’re part of The Smarts and some vague Other group of people are part of The Stupids are the first in line to get rooked.
And yet, “pro life”.
F**king hypocrites.
Pro lifers don’t give a shit about the post-born. Hypocrisy in name, but their wretchedness is absolutely consistent and comes from the rot in their cores. At least give them credit for being so predictably, reliably awful, and plainly advertising who the enemy is. It’s on the rest of us to know and see them for who they are, and do the right things when when they try to do the wrong ones.
The babies that died are horrific, but what really got me was:
Maicy was 16 years old but the size of a third grader: 62 pounds and just shy of 4 feet tall. She had suffered from a constellation of ailments: stomach irritation, severe anemia, erratic menstrual periods, a blocked artery, thickened aorta and thinning hair. An autopsy after she died on New Year’s Day 2019 traced it all back to a benign, treatable pituitary tumor.
She was 16. She should have been chasing boys and living life and enjoying herself and doing all the stuff teenagers do. Instead she watched her peers do this, while her stilted ruined body slowly killed her from the inside. For years she watched herself become something utterly wrong and transformed. That poor fucking girl. A benign, easily treatable pituitary tumor. One easy surgery, and she would have lived a long, healthy life. Instead her parents watched her die and did nothing for years.
They should be in fucking jail.
I wonder if they would go to the hospital for bullet wounds? Has someone tested this theory?
bullet wounds?
Just exercising their 2nd amendment rights
deleted by creator
Bullet wounds? Sorry, 4th amendment rights.
That’s the 2nd Amendment, you dunce.
4th Amendment is unlawful search and seizure, like asking someone for their immigration papers during a routine traffic stop.
unlawful search and seizure,
…of the bullets in the body. It tracks.
Its the 3rd that I am really grateful for.
At first, I was like 'Fuck Idaho, the cesspool!", but then I did some thinking on the issue. This is probably a symptom of a greater disease: the lack of universal health-insurance. I mean, Idaho has a long history of deregulation, which makes their food and environment a poison; stagnant wages because its Idaho, a long-time Republican mecha; an unaffordable healthcare system, something that plagues this “developed” country; and an insurance system that must prevent covering care because its owned by rich people in a for-profit market. Think on it, we live in a society where someone accused of murder is a hero:

Combine all that and “being tiny” isn’t a big enough concern to risk medical bankruptcy.
we need actual universal healthcare, not something tied to having an ID or being an adult. At minimum for getting vaccines because they are relatively cheap (less than $100) and have there be a way to get them without it being logged for some semblance of protection from family.
Another question asked this morning has me thinking about how my parents treated me as a child. I was sick one time and my parents waited until my ear drums burst before taking me to the doctor. Really it was because someone had came by that morning and saw blood coming out of my ears. I don’t think they would have ever taken me to the doctor otherwise.
My aunt had rubella, grandparents delayed taking her in until it got bad and it developed into a life long heart disease, don’t recall what it was called, but she died young in mid 30s from complications of the heart disease. Left two young children and husband behind, my grandparents never really forgave themselves for it. I think sometimes we forget that adults are just grown children feeling their way through caring for a family, and hindsight can be 20/20.
My parents never wasted a moment feeling bad about the things they did. My burst ear drums were the first of a few times they were willing to let me die without treatment. It took me far too long to realize how terrible they were. They only ever did anything for me if they were getting public credit for it. It was all just a show for them. For their benefit. My 20/20 hindsight is full of moments where I thought they were helping me but instead were exploiting me.
The truth is simple. Some people shouldn’t be allowed responsibility for a fruit fly much less a child.
“Hindsight can he 20/20” applies to forgetting a restaurant is closed on Sunday or something, not for deliberately allowing a child to die of preventable disease. They should all be prosecuted for negligent homicide.
I feel that, my wife had a shitty childhood, but my example just highlighted how some parents who are responsible move through life with children. At the far ends of the spectrum you have those who take their kids to the doctor over every sniffle and those who may not, thinking the child will recover, especially if that’s the experience with their other children. Don’t get me wrong I understand there are parents that are completely devoid of responsibility, concern and care for their offspring, but their are others that care for them, they just might understand or realize a potentially harmful situation when presented with it.
It would lose an election for any politician saying it, but sometimes the child’s rights supersede a parents right to do whatever they want with their kids.
You shouldn’t be able to do things like refuse to feed your child, refuse to give your child medical care, or refuse to educate your child.
No. a presidential candidate should absolutely run on that. Child abuse charges for the parents for failure to seek medical help
They’d lose if it were a local position within Idaho. Those same people who didn’t wear masks, refuse to vaccinate, refuses care for their child? All those same people are the same people VOTING.
It would be different if it weren’t an election in the most brain dead state.
Yeah, it’s impressive to find a new low BELOW Florida. At least Florida knows how to pull in tourists. Who the fuck wants to willingly go to Idaho???
Honestly, it’s breathtakingly beautiful. And there are cults fuckin everywhere.
You don’t run on it you just enforce at a federal level. Republicans love state rights until they’re in power then they love telling states what they can and can’t do.
Democrats need to force this down their fng throat
I would hope that after two years of this insanity and blatant federal abuse of states, Democrats would be more supportive of states rights and reluctant to continue the decades long trend of expanding executive power.
Not less.
Your fucking joking right
No. Don’t misunderstand, I fucking hate this. This is disgusting. But the article points to the problem explicitly. It’s a bullet point at the top.
No Legal Pressure: Oregon officials say after the state put legal boundaries on faith healing, more parents sought care for kids. Idaho, by contrast, has kept its faith-healing protections.
I just don’t see the necessity to reach for the largest most powerful tool to solve a problem that is up to the citizens of Idaho to solve.
The federal government has literally executed citizens without trial in the streets. I’ve lost my appetite for the federal government having power. Perhaps, if the fed was weaker and states had more mechanisms of resisting or standing up for their own principles, we’d be better off.
I’m not advocating for nothing to be done. I’m just asking why must it be the federal government and not the Idaho government? Why invite a protracted supreme court battle over parents rights / religious protections? Do you think we’d win that right now? Genuinely?
There are more important things to push on at a federal level. Expand supreme court. Expand the house of representatives. Move to proportional representation instead of first past the post. All of this returns power to people so they can actually enact what they want. Things like climate change. LGBTG rights.
It’s tragic kids are dieing in Idaho. Kids are dieing in federal concentration camps. Who knows many have died, actually? How many people deported are dead now? How many people will die when their asylum status is revoked and are deported? The federal government is tampering with elections. Pushing states to redraw maps. And the supreme court does nothing.
What those cultists are doing to children and their families is deranged. Something must be done. By the people of Idaho. Because the federal government is too fucked to help. Maybe next year it’ll be better. We can only hope for a great midterm and more DSA wins.
Idaho features beautiful nature and really interesting geology, so there’s plenty of tourism potential. If it weren’t for the people it would make for a lovely destination.
Yeah it’s probably one of the most beautiful states in my opinion, but fuck no I won’t go
Can confirm spent a yr living there, hated every second would take death before even driving through it
It gets a little trickier when you start talking about things like teaching evolution and sex ed, or not allowing minors to be indoctrinated by religions.
Want to really see the fur fly? Try banning genital mutilation. There is no defensible logic for chopping up a baby’s genitals even if your god told you to do so. That’s some barbaric, bronze age shit that should in no way be legal in any nation that wants to call itself “civilized”. It’s as logical as slicing a baby’s eyelids off at birth. Without anesthesia, I might add.
Ok this is going to make my head spin. But im Guessing the religious nutjobs who think kids are a having gender reassignment surgery and get outraged about it are also the same people who are ok with genital mutilation, mostly on women, due to religious beliefs.
Edit. This should be able to be used to turn more people’s religion against each other
IIRC female genital mutilation became federally legal in the US due to a Michigan court case decided by a Trump district judge. That was during the first term and I haven’t kept track to see if they made it illegal again.
The only difference between MAGA and the Taliban is which proper nouns they use.
The nuclear family model, the parents have absolute rights over the child, is as nonsensical as it sounds.
It takes a village and the village should be able to intervene when parents put their child at risk.
Yes but under our current model, I don’t know if you want the state owning all the kids. I’m not sure if Trump or nestlé or whatever lobbying firm would decide their future really has their best interest at heart.
Oh I totally agree. I’m an anarchist. Hence why I was careful to say the village and not the state.
I’ve never agreed with the idea that a child is the property of the parent. The kid has rights, and those should supersede a religious parent who thinks they can replace medicine with prayer.
Medical care is optional and premium in the US for everyone.
Children have no rights :(
Fetuses do though. By some weird logic.
the child’s rights supersede a parents right to do whatever they want
withto their kids. It’s pedantic but children have no agency, what is being done in Idaho is being done to children.
I would argue children have limited agency depending on their level of development. For example, child custody courts take the wishes of the child into consideration when determining custody of the child is old enough to express their preferences.
If this treatment is legal in Idaho then they do not have agency.
The Constitution supercedes state law.
Does it really? Sure seems like the highest court in the land disagrees.
And before you start arguing that’s only been under Trump go all the way back to Dred Scott v. Sandford, which denied citizenship to African Americans, and Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld racial segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Both of those are great examples of SCOTUS ruling in opposition to the Constitution.
If I do whatever I want with my paintbrush, that doesn’t imply the paintbrush has agency.
No, it doesn’t, but I don’t really understand your point.
Agency generally means the capacity of a living being to act independently, make choices, and influence their environment.
A minor child has little agency to begin with in an abuse situation and indifference of the legal system strips away even that little bit.
I was commenting on your incorrect pedantry correcting a perfectly correct sentence.
Thanks for clarifying that you’re not keeping up with the conversation.
People being pedantic and not even having the decency to be correct with it just annoys me.
Idaho is filled with fucking nut job people.
The sad thing is that as I understand it Idaho used to be that old school mind your own business libertarians, wherein they were kinda assholes but they had lines and standards. Sometime in the 70s/80s/90s when the whackjobs started getting pressure put on them in the other western states namely California all the fucked up weirdos more or less overran Idaho which caused it to go from culturally similar to rural San Bernardino in morst areas to what it is now. If you want to see a solid microcosm of this with one town look up how one fucked up christofascist mega church has been trying to seize control of Moscow Idaho.
I mean Ammon Bundy lives in Idaho. That’s all you need to know.
Oh im not denying that by any means Idaho is kinda a shithole, even if I do like the surplus warehouse in Idaho Falls. Frankly speaking I want to pull that state more than Utah since in Utahs case it’d just be genocide, in Idahos case it’d probably be closer to a humanitarian mission if you wiped out the cults and helped the kids. Seriously Idaho is fucken infested with cults so bad that the Mormons look benign.
Idaho is one of the worst states in the country, look at who they voted for
Remember that Idaho is filled with people who think Utah is too liberal.
Had a gay friend who grew up in Idaho. I was talking to him about how so many states try to pretend there’s more to them than their stereotypes. Texans like to say it sn’t just cowboys and Mexican food, but Idaho embraces the “Potaotoes” thing and doesn’t talk about the rest.
He that when all a state has is potatoes and gun-totin white supremacists, they want you to talk about the potatoes.
I mean shit, logically I knew that but seeing it written out like that is… it’s just fucking something.
I had a roommate from Idaho in college. He thought Bill O’Reilly was too liberal. I stopped sleeping when he was around.
Imagine living in salt lake and wanting to get back to “civilization” when you visit your relatives. Idaho is cold windy racism that looks great to fly over
This is so wild to me. Like this is very much - intentionally causing bodily harm to the kid - a reason you should have your kids taken away from you.
Just being able to go 6 weeks with a clearly devastatingly sick kid and never once take him to see a medical professional is wild to me.
He was taken from them…
Well they only care about them until they are born.
They only pretend to care until they’re born.
Mor(m)on faith (lack of) healings
I like to remind people that Idaho is a shit hole state.
Lots of white supremacy.
Yeah, Idaho is one of the worst states in the nation. Look at who they voted for
Southern Idaho is full of Mormons. Northern Idaho is full brain damaged people from the extreme amount pollution that the mines caused.
https://www.gonzaga.edu/news-events/stories/the-bunker-hill-mine-fire-lead-poisoning
Idaho and Utah historically had some of the largest and most active KKK memberships. Mormonism is racist by published doctrine (even though recent leadership has attempted to disavow it).
Southern Idaho:
https://www.intermountainhistories.org/items/show/813
Northern Idaho gets a bit more extreme.
Is that the one that straight up had a standoff with police to protect their right to be super racist?
Ruby Ridge was tangentially linked to the group.
