The viewer needs to ask the question before they seek the answer. Lies depend as much on the viewer’s desire to believe as it does on the lie itself.

There are already short videos that 95% of people would not question. And, I suspect everyone has already been fooled at least once by an image, no matter how skeptical.

They who would fool us don’t need 100% of us to believe, there will always be “conspiracy nuts”, which is how they can dismiss those who ask. It doesn’t help at all that many people are knee-jerk calling anything suspicious to them “AI”. Not always because of something in the image, just that in their limited experience “that never happens”, so, “it must be AI”.

If you’re out in the world, and you claim something is AI, give your reasons. Point out what you saw, don’t just do a drive-by comment, that makes it worse, not better.

This one frustrates me for other reasons too. If you knew-jerk to calling everything AI, you aren’t actually trying to determine if it was an artist making it or if it’s generated, which only makes you worse at detecting the differences between them.

I will sometimes stare at an image for 30+ seconds just to try and find which way I think I lean. If I’m not sure, I don’t call it out, but remain skeptical. We should always be trying to be vigilant and never just accept “that looks weird” as being “that’s AI”. There’s also always the chance it’s a real photo depending on context no matter how weird.

Yeah yeah heard that before the whole “You can’t tell it’s actually AI” which is so dumb and wrong because it is transparently clear when it is an AI writting, speaking, or generating images. The signs are there clear as day if you know better. Just because most people don’t know better doesn’t mean it’s futile.
