Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver

The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the big AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”.

In an interview released on Monday, Altman was asked about how OpenAI’s approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic, which has called for the industry to slow down after one of its researchers quit, warning that AI experts believed “it could kill us all by the end of the decade”.

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman said. “One of the differences between us and some of the stricter AI safety people is that we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].

No thanks. I’d rather have Google Assistant back and Gemini can fuck off forever. I just wanted to set timers and navigate hands free, but Gemini seems to find ways to fuck up even the simplest stuff that Assistant could reliably do, even offline!

This is the “AI” experience in nutshell: Shit is straight up broken and unreliable compared to what we had before from search to digital assistants to what should be basic apps we need to use.

In no appreciable way has “AI” improved my life, but it has definitely made everything way more expensive, caused massive harm to the environment, and is literally making people who use it stupid. What benefits is this asshole talking about!?

Turns out basing computers on logic and math is way more useful than bullshit and hallucinations. Especially since we’ve made our entire industrial system dependent on them functioning well and consistently.

I will say, LLM does have some legitimate uses, but the “AI” garbage being crammed into every conceivable thing is aggressively stupid.

I think we’re doing way too many Springer “information” lately. And they didn’t even include the actual interview.
