I tried to find the video but I can’t. It might have been taken down in the aftermath but searching for it pulls up all the latest drama as well…

As I recall, Kurzgesagt got called out for plagiarizing a smaller channel by that smaller channel. It turned out that that channel had fact-checked an out of date video and made their own video calling Kurzgesagt out. Kurzgesagt then made a video correcting their previous video and explaining why errors were made, without mentioning the other channel.

It blew over, nobody cared, and the other channel showed their ass a bit and lost the court of public opinion.

      Downvotes from the fanclub.

I try to call out their shit quality, bullshit stories and pseudoscience regularly, but I’m not going to do hour-long debunks. I unsubscribed many years ago when I realized that they were promoting a type of ecomodernist consumer-friendly consumer-stroking narrative about the world.

In terms of quality, they seem to be making stories that make watchers feel good, feel like they’ve learned something, but they haven’t, they just feel like it afterwards. In other spaces, this is called “tutorial hell.” They feel better after and they feel optimistic; the stories are a type of sermon to keep the faith in something. I’ll let you figure out what that is.

For what it’s worth, I’m kind of with you. Kurzgesagt and other pop science channels don’t lead viewers to nuanced positions and the point is just to make people feel like they learned something.

I do feel like you’re missing that it’s important to make people feel like they can learn, and that’s the role that Kurzgesagt plays. Some people will get stuck there, and that’s a problem in itself, but it’s really important to have these “Level 1” avenues for learning about science that will make people more interested.
