a couple snippets from the interview. the first snippet is about Tom Morelloa doing some concert to promote voting in the midterms. the second snippet is him saying that he didn’t vote for Kamala because of her complicity in Gaza genocide, he doesn’t use the word genocide.

Is there an argument that people’s focus on Ed Sheeran is indeed a distraction from what they should be focusing on?

Yeah, 100 percent. It’s all right to shame him in this moment because he deserves the shame, but not the focus. The focus is your and my tax dollars are going to commit horrific war crimes in the Middle East, and that, I believe, should be the focus and what we should be doing our best to stop in its tracks.

It’s a clickbait, it’s salacious, it’s, “Oh my gosh, poor Ed Sheeran.” First of all, has Ed Sheeran never seen a Macklemore performance before in the last three years? He certainly should’ve known what he was getting into.

The one thing that’s sort of adjacent is, this is a time where speech is being vilified and is a crime, where the truth is a crime, where skin color is a crime, where immigrant status is a crime, where gender is a crime, where sexual orientation is a crime. And it’s my belief that the true crime is the rise of authoritarianism, and the true crime is the erosion of freedoms, and the true crime is an impending environmental disaster. And so my hope at each one of my shows, I deputize the audience as anti-fascist crime fighters, and that’s really the way that I think you have to look at the world right now. Like, what are the real crimes that are happening, and what is it that you and I can do to stop it?

Now that I’ve gotten you fired up — your Power to the People Festival. What is its most essential purpose?

It is not PR or hyperbole to say it is a festival of peace, love, justice, and music. In a time where war is celebrated, this is a festival of peace. In a time where hatred and division are rife, this is a festival of love. In a time where injustice is the norm, this is a festival celebrating fighting for justice. In a time where there’s a lot of shitty music, there’s gonna be a lot of great music on this stage, so we’re going for four for four.

How much were the midterms on your mind when you scheduled this?

As my dear departed mom, Mary Morello, who passed away at 102 years old, was a very political person, said, “You’ve got to fight the fascists every which way you can.” One of those ways is at the ballot box. It’s not the only way, and you should not just think that because you’ve done that. Voting is a piece on the chessboard, and that you try to create an environment where in between the voting you can fight for a more just, a more peaceful, a more equal world.

And so, is the festival three weeks before the midterms? Yeah. Does the money from the festival go to voting rights organizations? Yeah, it does, but the festival is about something much bigger than that. It’s about what kind of world do you really wanna live in, and should we fight for that world, or should we settle for the one that’s being spoon-fed for us by the oligarchs?

Returning as promised to the electoralism issue — there are some on the left who tend to argue it doesn’t matter, don’t bother voting, both sides are the same. So what would you say to someone on the left who says, “Listen, man, I listen to Rage Against the Machine, and I know everyone’s the same. It’s about tearing down the power structure. Doesn’t matter who you vote for. I’m not voting”?

On the one hand, I think that rebellion is self-care, in a way, but I answered that already. Mary Morello was 100 percent right. You have to stop the fascists every which way you can. First of all, a lot of people who I greatly respect and admire the sacrifice they’ve made to try to get people with my color skin to be able to vote in this country, and have died, been lynched for it, they’ve been shot in the back for it, and it’s very disrespectful to their memory to do that.

But that in and of itself is not going to change the levers of power in a significant way. It’s not. It’s not. You should do it. But it would be like, okay, great, you vote, and on the next day you start working. You start working harder for the world you really want without compromise and without apology. And not just putting in the hands of whatever corporate Democrat you choke down your vote for in that particular election, that it’s your job to make the world the way that you think it could be to help those that are the most in need and to hold those accountable who are most guilty.

Do you feel that people on the left should have voted for Kamala Harris?

I’m crystal clear that people’s conscience cannot allow them to do something that they fundamentally believe is wrong. I was the scheduling secretary for United States Senator Alan Cranston. I saw how the corporate Democrat sausage is made. It is worse than you think. And there is a reason, there is a righteous fury at the corporate controlled, money controlled electoral system we have that is absolutely legitimate, and people cannot choke down — I understand it — voting for a candidate that’s responsible for what happened in Gaza, and they just can’t do it, and I’m not gonna blame them for that.

But I think that putting it on them is the most cowardly thing. Put it on the fucking Democratic Party. First of all, I don’t believe it’s their responsibility and they’re never gonna necessarily never do the right thing, but I think it’s all of our responsibility to co-create the world that we want and not point fingers at people that were just like, “Well, you know, my conscience didn’t allow me to do that, so it’s your fault.” I will not co-sign that.

Did you vote for Kamala?

I certainly did not.

You did not?

Did not. I couldn’t do it.

I didn’t realize that.

V for Vendetta — that one inch of who you are belongs to you, and they can’t have it. Now, I live in a state where it may not have moved the meter, but I just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t do it.

When’s the last time that you didn’t vote for the Democratic candidate?

Can’t remember the last time I did.

Wow, okay. I thought you were softening a little bit.

Can’t remember the last time I did.

I’ve been voting for 18 years, since I could vote, been into politics for longer. All I can say is bring up the definition of insanity is what it’s like. You think you’re voting for change.

Yeah I voted for Obama, great he did everything I voted for not to be done. Bombed the shit out of a bunch of countries. Passed a half-ass insurance market that was a only a bit better then getting spit roasted, really just caved in to the insurance companies instead of a UHC/NHS. Didn’t legalize cannabis and not even change the scheduling for it. After eight years, it didn’t seem like much happened. Obama is a very charismatic politician and I voted for him, honestly looking back I kinda think McCain would have been more reasonable since I met him in person and well protested his speech, I’m surprise the security didn’t haul me away. And I write this because Obama did signed off on one of the most atrocious things, and expansion of the Patriot Act. If you thing this whole icy thing is new, no it started with Bush Jr and expanded by Obama.

Biden is the reason why you can’t discharge student loans through bankruptcy. So SLABs became a thing, people investing on your school debt.

Kamala was a perfect example of the shit show the political system is. Last minute changes. A figure that has negative Charisma points. I mean people bring up the whole laughing thing. I get it. We’re all fucked because from covid and you having the time of your life and haha I’m going to be the first female President, didn’t exactly set a good image. Realistically the DNC should have just asked AOC to run and I hope she does in the future. At least it wouldn’t look like a Manchurian candidate.

I didn’t vote for Rump but it didn’t feel like I voted for anything and wasted a day.

No shit? The lady who said there must be a peace-fire… [cheers] … for at least six weeks (or some similar bullshit). And didn’t let any Palestinians speak at her big party. And told other activists to go to another rally for whatever they were saying. She lost? I wonder why.

It’s not difficult to meet your voters where they are if you actually listen to them.

The majority of deaths happened under Biden, you only think Trump was worse for Gaza because liberals were in doing everything they could to deny and downplay the genocide when they were doing it.

The point in not voting for Kamala is to put pressure on the democrats to stave off the authoritarian apocalypse they are delivering. It’s not just stay at home and do nothing, but make your voice heard. Make sure people know what your demands are, organize with others. The dems are holding Trump as a gun to your heads saying “vote for me or else you’ll get Trump” while bombing and killing in your name. And with your vote secured they keep sliding right, trying to appeal to people like the conservatives that aren’t voting for them. So counterbalance that. Become part of the class of people they have to appeal to, make them earn their vote. You only get one, don’t give it up for free.

You realise you’re doing exactly what conservatives want you to do?

They know it’s not possible to win your vote, so instead just convince you not to vote, and / or criticise your own side.

…it’s not possible to win your vote…

Lets take a look at the requirements to get votes:

                • Be against genocide
                • Be against the bombing of children
                • Make healthcare on par with the rest of the first-world
                • Stop supporting Trump
                • Stop supporting rapists
                • Stop supporting masked thugs, from kidnapping, raping, torturing, stealing, and murdering
                • Stop taking money from the workers, and giving it to the rich

None of that seems impossible at all. It actually seems pretty easy to me. But the Democrats would rather help put Trump in power.

Tom Morello lives in California, where his vote for president doesn’t matter at all, and is literally doing work to promote voting now. It sounds like he’s not going to hold it against anyone if they can’t stomach voting for Democrats with truly abhorrent policies though. It shouldn’t be such a hard bar to pass for them not to push people to that “one last inch”.

      I sure will.

The time to support the candidate you want is before the primary. In the primary, vote for the least abhorrent option. And then in the general, vote for the least abhorrent option. That’s the only sane way.

So if someone looks at voting and says they won’t vote blue in the general election, they support fascism, like it or not. If they didn’t do anything before that point, well, they fucking should have done.

I know the popular vote isn’t that important because the US has a fucked up 2-party system.

But it is a metric that is being used to try to get rid of gerrymandering.

So unless you love gerrymandering, better vote so it is clear who is more popular.

Many people who don’t vote believe (with some pretty good justification, imo) that it’s all bread and circuses, that ultimately the U.S. government is going to do what it wants regardless of who gets elected. I’m personally with you that it does make a difference, but I don’t think anyone’s done a good job of making a case to the skeptics that things would have been substantially different if Kamala Harris had won (and pointing out how shockingly awful things under Trump are isn’t enough, especially considering how many moderate Democrats have been happy to go along with that awfulness when push comes to shove). How do you convince people they still have a modicum of power in a system that is so clearly designed to make most of us powerless?

Did she really say she wanted to bomb Iran specifically?

I think bombing a school was a case of DT pushing for war and military incompetence: I.e. lazy AI bombing plans caused that blunder.

          https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/8/kamala-harris-says-iran-is-greatest-adversary-of-us

          October 2024:

In an interview with the CBS television network aired on Monday night, the Democratic presidential candidate said Iran is the “obvious” answer when asked about the country she considers to be the US’s “greatest adversary”.

“Iran has American blood on their hands – this attack on Israel, 200 ballistic missiles,” she said. “What we need to do [is] to ensure that Iran never achieves the ability to be a nuclear power. That is one of my highest priorities.”

Meanwhile, the Biden administration continued to enforce Trump-era sanctions against Iran and added dozens of its own against Iranian companies and officials.

Harris “unequivocally” denounced the Iranian missile launches. “I am clear-eyed: Iran is a destabilising, dangerous force in the Middle East, and today’s attack on Israel only further demonstrates that fact,” she said on October 1.

The vice president has repeatedly pledged to continue to arm Israel, citing in part what she calls the threat of Iran, despite growing anger over well-documented Israeli abuses in Gaza and Lebanon.

Correct. Bot farms universally support conservative positions, so it’s unlikely our objectives or opinions would ever align.

Admittedly, I don’t think the threadiverse has enough users to be a target for misinformation from bots. Last cycle we just saw users that had picked up the talking points from bots on other platforms.

It’s adorable that you seem to think you know me. Like it or not, the presidential race in the US is a two party race. Should it be more? Absofuckinglutely. But it’s not. And you know for a fact it’s a waste of a vote to do anything other than Democrat or republican.

If you want to talk about voting in local races, by all means, that’s where change starts.

This is a bit of an advanced piece of politics, but the way voting works is you vote for a candidate and if you dont vote for them, then they dont get your vote. Neat, right?

That is how it supposed to work.

But because the US has a semi-2-party system, you can only realistically vote on 2 candidates. So if you don’t vote for the better candidate, you are essentially letting the worse candidate win.

But hey, at least you can sit on your moral tower, amiright?

And the slightly more advanced piece is that the point of voting is for the person you want to get more votes than the person you don’t. So a candidate getting an extra vote, versus the total they need to beat going down by one vote, is functionally the same thing.

It functionally isn’t. Morello voted just as much for Harris as he did for Trump.
This approach of yours relies on the base assumption that democrats are somehow owed a vote and if you dont vote for them, then you take one away. That’s not how it works.
He pretty clearly stated he would not vote for Harris, meaning he did not want her to win. He also did not vote for Trump, so he did not want him to win.

Genuinely what do you think she would have done, because from where I’m standing it just looks like she was going to say “Civility good, Hamas bad” in order to keep the flow of weapons going. I mean even AOC voted for sending weapons to the IOF, why do we think she wouldn’t have?

Quite well, actually. Kamala or Trump winning would have resulted in the exact same outcome in Gaza. The vast majority of the Gaza deaths were during Biden’s term. Trump’s Gaza policy is “continue all of Biden’s policies, but be more performatively cruel about it.”

So in terms of the actual impact on Gaza, Trump or Kamala winning made no difference at all.

However, what has changed is that support for Zionism has become politically radioactive among the Democratic party. This was only possible because Kamala’s genocide support cost her the presidency. Her loss delegitimized pro-genocide voices among the Democrats, and the party has moved substantially on the issue.

So again, the actual condition on the ground in Gaza hasn’t changed, but Trump and Kamala had identical Gaza platforms - full support for genocide. At least with Kamala losing, there are some hopeful signs of optimism for the future.

Something isn’t “insane bullshit” just because it goes against your sports team. The cold hard, unavoidable truth is that the vast majority of the deaths and destruction in Gaza occurred on Biden’s watch. Trump just continued Biden’s policies, though admittedly with more performative cruelty.

i find it very amusing that when the two major US parties do the same policy, regardless of which originated it, on the fediverse it’s always “the democrats did this and republicans continued it”.

That’s a pretty broad brush for such a narrow observation.

You’ll find most people agree the USA PATRIOT act had the Republicans starting it and the Democrats continuing it. Still shitty policy, though.

No I think Trump has been worse on Gaza than Harris would have been. The cruelty isn’t just performative, it has hurt real people. But between the two of them, Gaza was doomed by the bipartisan consensus no matter what.

I agree that Trump has made pro-Israel stances absolutely toxic on the left. I don’t think that would have happened with Harris in office. But the cost has been incredibly high.

I really see no evidence that Kamala would have been any better. This seems to be a vibes-based argument. Trump has more evil vibes than Kamala, so therefore he has to be materially worse for Gaza. In practice, both sides give a blank check to the Israelis. Kamala would have given a blank check to Netanyahu while giving speeches calling for peace and reconciliation. Trump gave the same blank check while calling Palestinians subhuman animals. The actual material reality is the same. Trump’s just cruder and crueler about it.

Her constituency was EXTREMELY against Israel’s actions to the point of HER LOSING BECAUSE OF IT. That would have made a difference. That same constituency forced a sitting president to give up his run for a 2nd term mere months before an election. Dems have to consider their constituency’s stance on topics more than Republicans do.

And now we have a president (and House and Senate) whose constituency doesn’t give a flying fuck about Palestinians.

Never, ever forget that the reason Biden got cancelled was because of a bad tv performance and not the genocide. I distinctly remember all the blueanon folk screaming about holding ones nose and voting for biden until he looked bad on TV, then the dems told them who to blindly support next and when that (very predictably) failed the people that get blamed for the loss are … the voters that just couldn’t swallow what the dems shat out. It’s time to hold the politicians accountable and not the masses that are doing exactly what the system is supposedly for, affirming or not affirming someone for public office.

It would have been a she had already been president. Biden should have stepped down 2 years in, and let her lead. Just think of it a young energetic incredibly smart woman running this country instead of the bumbling idiot we have now. All because people couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a black woman. If you don’t think racism and misogyny has anything to do that you sure the fuck don’t know anything about this country. Go to the Midwest and ask them if they would ever vote for a black woman regardless of party.

Who are you talking about? I never saw that candidate

All because people couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a black woman.

Obama is one of the most popular presidents we’ve ever had (I have no idea why, but I have to concede that its true). And Hillary won the popular vote.

Harris didn’t lose because she was a black woman, she lost because she was a terrible politician, who ran a terrible campaign on terrible policies, while riding the coattails of a terrible president.

Bullshit, for about 99 percent of the Midwest would not vote for a black woman she absolutely was not a terrible candidate. You people just refused to listen to her millions of people absolutely loved her. You have no idea the depth of racism and misogyny in this country. A half black man won because he was half white and had charisma oozing out of his pores and after the disaster that Bush was he was a logical choice.

…she absolutely was not a terrible candidate.

She wouldn’t say “bombing kids is bad”, or “genocide is bad”, or “our economy is terrible, we should do something to fix it”. All of those would have been easy. She ran on unpopular platforms, and refused to distance herself from a terrible president, whose aproval rating was terrible. She was the most popular before she started going on interviews. She spent her entire campaign shooting herself in the foot.

You people just refused to listen to her…

I listened very closely to her. I heard her say that she wanted to keep America “the most lethal fighting force in the world”. I heard her say that she would “follow the law” instead of supporting LGBTQ people. I heard her say “I’m speaking” when people asked her to stop supporting genocide.

…millions of people absolutely loved her.

Millions of people absolutely loved Trump. Do you think that makes him a good candidate?

You have no idea the depth of racism and misogyny in this country.

Yes I do. I’ve lived in this country my whole life. I’ve lived in the midwest, and I have family in the south.

A half black man won because he was half white and had charisma oozing out of his pores and after the disaster that Bush was he was a logical choice.

And she had the easiest election I’ve ever seen handed to her on a silver platter. But she chose to give it up in order to keep supporting genocide, instead of keeping Trump out of office.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume that’s true, in which case the Democratic party would have known from polling that running Harris was a losing strategy. So then why did they run her? Why did they cancel the primary and undemocratically force her down our throats?

SHE WAS ON THE FUCKING PRIMARY BALLOT! Her name was right there! If you voted for Biden in the primary it was a vote for her if he couldn’t run. I voted for her. Honestly the Democratic party is going to lose no matter what. Republicans only have to appeal to their base, Democrats have to have the perfect candidate that appeases the leftists, liberals, Democrats, independents AND the undecided so unless they find the perfect candidate that fulfills evey single thing that all of those groups want, you are not going to get a democratic president. Honestly Dems really need to just switch to the Democratic socialist to see real action. But no they are fixing mamby pamby assholes who will write a struggle worded letter. Meanwhile the fascists are talking over and ignoring all the laws and rules

Democrats have to have the perfect candidate…

Lets take a look at the Democrats:

                  • Keeping the US the deadliest military force in the world
                  • Supporting genocide
                  • Continuing to let Americans die of easily treatable diseases
                  • Continuing to keep Healthcare as the leading cause of bankruptcy
                  • Taking money from the workers, and giving it to the rich
                  • Supporting rapists, kidnappers, murderers and theives
                  • Supporting Trump
                  • Supporting ICE
                  • Torture
                  • Mass deportations

I think your understanding of the word “perfect” might be a little off. We aren’t waiting for the “perfect” candidate. We’re waiting for someone that isn’t a monster. Something that the Democrats refuse to supply.

But no they are fixing mamby pamby assholes who will write a struggle worded letter.

Yes. Because they would rather let Trump and the Republicans win, than fix any of the aforementioned things.

Meanwhile the fascists are talking over and ignoring all the laws and rules

The Democrats are supporting the fascists, and they also ignore the laws and rules when it suits them.

Then I guess Tom Morello can’t see the forest for the trees.

Getting mad and not doing anything doesn’t make you virtuous. Just makes you a goddamn idiot. Sitting it out or voting for someone who literally cannot win puts you in that category.
