Thanks to u/[email protected] for turning me on to Ship of Harkinian. It’s my opinion after messing with it for a half hour that this is THE way to experience OoT again.

Here’s a link to their comment if you’d like to upvote it.

“Hey, Mom. Can we have OoT?”

“We already have OoT at home!”

The OoT at home:

I’ve been running Ocarina when I can. I just completed the Water Temple. All I need now are the Fire and Shadow Medallions, then I can whack Ganondorf.

I don’t even have a Switch 2, and I’m not buying it just to be sold nostalgia I can already relive with stuff I’ve had for like 20 years. That said, I am running it on Gopher64 this time around.

That’s okay, no one is making you. Enjoyment is not based on what everyone else thinks! I personally cannot wait to play it. Have fun, it’s a great game!

Personally I can’t wait for the OoT remake to inevitably get its own Ship. It might take 20 years, but I’m willing to wait that long to finally be able to play the definitive version of OoT.

I don’t mind console exclusivity if the console were unique in some way, and the exclusive games made use of that feature.

Nintendo games in the past did this quite well. Many games I’ve played on the DS just wouldn’t work or feel the same way with traditional input.

Are you doing a randomizer? Three hearts after mirror shield which is an item you get in the last dungeon and still needing the fire medallion is an interesting way to play the vanilla game

Nope, I’m running vanilla. I’m experimenting with what you can do out of order. There’s nothing stopping you from just leaving the Water Temple to do Spirit Temple after you get the longshot. I’m sure there’s a way to get there without the longshot too.

I’m also doing a 3 heart run because OoT is actually pretty easy. There does come a point where you have to start doing boss fights perfectly because every hit is OHKO. I’ve finished a run like this before. But now that I know about Ship, I’m gonna turn the damage multipliers way up and give myself a reason to actually get hearts.

I’ve seen some YouTubers like Linkus and PointCrow do randomizers before, and I’ve genuinely considered it a number of times. There are some of the glitches I’m having trouble nailing. Like the hook shot jump off Dampe’s hut to access Shadow Temple early.

But I don’t think I ever considered that there would be difficulty levels on these lol I never tried one because I didn’t want to get super far into a run and lose it to a glitch that I just don’t have the time to master. But knowing that there can be easier rolls set up makes me a bit more comfortable with the idea.

I absolutely love playing oot randomizers, and I actually just beat my first Dark Soul 3 rando this week. If the tricks and glitches are scaring you off you can leave the “Enable Tricks” section like it is and you shouldn’t need to do any crazy things to get to the end. I’d also recommend getting a tracker, linked below. I’d recommend the EmoTracker map, you click on the items you have and the map updates to show what is available. Green means you have everything available to finish a dungeon or get a chest, yellow means it’ll need an easy glitch or trick, orange for a more difficult glitch, and red is unavailable at the moment. They are super useful if you aren’t sure where to go or if you forget about a single odd chest that could have what you need.

        https://wiki.ootrandomizer.com/index.php/Trackers

If you do try a rando in the future I hope you enjoy it!

There’s all kinds of randomizers. There’s ones called “no logic” where anything can be placed anywhere and it can be unbeatable if you don’t know the ins-and-outs of all kinds of glitches and bypasses. On the flip side, there are beginner friendly randomizers that keep items “in logic,” wherein items can never be placed behind a check you cannot pass (e.g., the hookshot will never be in a place you need the hookshot to get to).

That’s not a remake, it’s a reboot. They’re starting from near the beginning of the timeline again, but it’s not the same story or same company. I’m genuinely excited from gameplay trailers.

Honestly Fable was getting a tad messy by the third game, starting over from scratch but using the original as a framework is probably the only way to do it. I feel like if Bethesda were to do a remake of any of the pre Morrowind games it’d be the same way, also I really wish they would remake Redguard because its such a cool game idea wrapped in a jank fest of an engine which funfact is technically 2d fucken Bethesda black magic.

There’s been a couple Nintendo Switch 2 games that I’ve wanted to play but haven’t been console sellers for me yet. OoT Remake is finally it, and the bonus is there’s now enough other games I want to play that it won’t just be a single game console haha.

I think video game remakes will be a thing long after millenials are gone, just like movie remakes. And I bet most of them will be disappointing, with the occasional faithful or even surpassing remake, just like with movies.

It would be cool to chart the distance in time between the original video game and all remakes. It’d be cool to see which games get evergreen remakes, and which go through unpopular periods before a renaissance. People will always remake the classics, but I bet most remakes will go in a cyclic fashion of cashing in on middle-aged nostalgia.

Hmm, I haven’t played Minish Cap. How is Twilight Princess similar?

When I play TP (GameCube version) it feels very much like playing OoT in style, and the world layout is very similar, but bigger (https://imgur.com/gallery/ocarina-of-time-twilight-princess-map-comparison-chateaulonlon-0DhLs3E). Dungeon design feels very similar too, just with more detail and fancier puzzles. The water temple is still a chore, with backtracking between levels being a core mechanic.

the world layout is very similar, but bigger

The general layout of Hyrule is never quite the same, but it’s always similar, dating back to the first Zelda game for the NES. That includes the general layout of key landmarks such as Lake Hylia, Zora’s Domain, Death Mountain, Gerudo Desert, and the Lost Woods, all of which are from the original NES title. Other key landmarks such as Hyrule Castle and Kakariko were introduced in A Link to the Past, which was the third game in the series.

Hmm, I haven’t played Minish Cap. How is Twilight Princess similar?

The story of Twilight Princess is most similar to Minish Cap IMO:

          • guide character is a dubiously good character from a parallel world cursed by the antagonist
          • antagonist invades from that parallel world and fills Hyrule with monsters
          • Link transforming between two forms is the core gimmick
          • the conflict between the guide character and the antagonist is more of a focus of the main plot than anything to do with Link specifically, besides that Link is “the chosen one”, and he has personal stake in the world getting ruined

That being said, Twilight Princess is a sequel to Ocarina of Time, including the end of Ocarina of Time as a core plot point and the Link from Ocarina of Time returning as the skeleton sword ghost.

Dungeon design feels very similar too, just with more detail and fancier puzzles. The water temple is still a chore, with backtracking between levels being a core mechanic.

I think a lot of what you are seeing here is just the Zelda series tropes and staples in general. However, Twilight Princess definitely is a deliberate return-to-form after the more experimental games that were Wind Waker and Majora’s Mask, but it includes some of the features, and improvements from Wind Waker, and some significant portions of Twilight Princess were built from cut content originally intended for Wind Waker.
